Diabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious pest of maize crops. Its larvae
feeds on maize roots, reducing water and nutrients absorption, and making plant less
productive and more susceptible to lodging. Despite adults can?t cause significant defoliation
on maize, they can feed on reproductive structures, leading to the need of adults control in
cases of high infestation. In this work it was evaluated the incidence of D. speciosa adults on
the vegetative stage of maize from first and second growing season. The study was
conducted in first and second growing season from 2018/19 agricultural year, in Chapecó,
SC, with the P30F53 VYHR maize genotype, sown in an experimental field of 600m2 (20 x
30m), in a density of 62.000 plants ha-1. Sowing from first growing season was carried on
September 28th, 2018 and from second growing season was carried on February 5th, 2019.
The predecessor crops from first and second growing season were triticale and common
bean, respectively. The experimental field was divided in six plots of 100m2 and the incidence
of D. speciosa was measured with yellow sticky traps installed in the center of each plot.
Traps were installed at 0.5m high, and when maize reached 1.5m, an extra trap was installed
at 1.5m high. During nine weeks after maize emergence, the traps were replaced weekly and
the number of captured insects was measured in laboratory. Data was submitted to ANOVA
and means compared by Tukey test at 5% of probability. In the first growing season, the
average number of captured D. specisa in each plot ranged from 9.3 to 14.5 from first to
seventh week. The peak of insects captured occurred at the eighth week, with 26.8
insects/plot. In the ninth week, a decrease in capture was observed, with 13.5 D.
speciosa/plot. As for second growing season, the number of D. speciosa captured/plot
ranged from 9.5 to 60.7. In this season, the population was higher in the initial weeks after
maize emergence, with peak of capture at three weeks (60.67 insects/plot). A decrease in
incidence was observed in the seventh, eighth and ninth week. The population of D. speciosa
was higher in second growing season in relation to first growing season, especially because
of the residual population from common bean (predecessor crop), which is a suitable host for
this pest. In first growing season the population of D. speciosa was constant and increased in
the end of vegetative stage, whereas in second growing season the population was higher in
the first weeks and decreased along the final weeks. Attention with this pest is required,
specially in second growing season, and management of adults is recommended in cases of
high infestation. MenosDiabrotica speciosa (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a serious pest of maize crops. Its larvae
